Inhalt:
A database management system (DBMS) is a commonplace component in modern information
systems. It proved succesful in storing, retrieving and maintaining administrative data. Performance,
data sharing, robustness, maintenance, scalability, and data independence are some of the
properties that can succesfully be achieved when using a DBMS. The participants of this course will
examine the more advanced uses of a DBMS some of which go even beyond the administrative
domain.
The lecture topics are:
-
Advanced data models: Richer data structuring approaches such as object-orientation and
XML.
- Distributed databases: How to manage data that is distributed over multiple locations.
- Data warehousing: How to set-up a database suitable for On-Line Analytical Processing
(OLAP).
- Information and multimedia retrieval: How to search for non-tabular data, such as text,
images, audio, video, etc.
- The role of databases in information system architectures: a few case studies of advanced
information systems and the use of a DBMS therein. Possible case studies are:
multichanneling and application service providing.
The practical part of this course concerns the development of a multimedia search engine. A data
collection of newspaper articles with photographs is available in XML-format. Small teams of two or
more students will be responsible for the development of parts of the multimedia search engine. This
will provide hands-on experience with advanced use of a DBMS.
